My Thoughts About Digital Photography
Last week I went to an exhibition by a landscape photographer. It was at a new gallery in town, so there was quite a big buzz around in the lead up to the night, and a lot of people turned out for the evening. He is a well established photographer, and still uses large format cameras, and has resisted the urge to go digital. I think it is easy to do landscape photography these days due to the advances in digital cameras, so it was great to see a guy who was still doing it the old fashioned way. I am a landscape shooter and I will be doing a Tokina 11-16 review here. I purchased the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 for my Nikon D90 DX for cityscape and landscape photography which usually have a magnificent vibe when they are taken by means of ultra-wide angle lenses.
I wasn’t prepared to pay extra than double the cost for a Nikon UWA because I normally get into this line of photography for only about 10% of the time.
But man, that 10% is properly spent with this lens on my D90.
With that being said, this fine piece of “reasonably priced” effectively constructed glass does deliver fantastic pictures comparable to Nikon glass. The sweet spot of which getting 2/3 inside the center at f2.8.
The manual/autofocus switch-ring essentially came genuinely handy for me at numerous occasions specially when I
bother to make the most of the D90′s HD video capturing function.

Picasso’s portraits of Dora have an air about them that is manipulative, an air that is as cutting as the nails in the portrait that transition into knives at closer viewing. One of the secrets of the art world is that while Picasso was becoming famous thanks to these works, Dora Maar was also creating hundreds of artworks. It is of fascinating interest that Dora Maar also painted portraits of Picasso. Even though it is Picasso’s paintings that use Dora that get the most attention, it can be clearly argued that Dora Maar’s works are more technically precise and of keener perception. Although Dora Maar’s portraits of Picasso provide keen insight into his personal flaws, Dora also kept a level of kindness and respect in these portraits.
It is this level of respect and kindness that is completely devoid in Picasso’s works using Dora. In works such as “Portrait de Picasso,” Dora does not use any cheaply shocking or basely dehumanizing techniques. While being devoid of these gimmicks, Dora instead sharply uses color contrasts and slight lines beneath the surface. I believe the uses of such contrasts are to represent the two differing faces that Picasso presents. The use of blue can be seen as the cool, charming airs which Picasso could manage to portray to others. The use of red can be seen as the heated temper, the angry nature and the cutting actions that also came out of Picasso in private life with Dora.
This portrait by Dora of Picasso is an extremely astute observation on the nature of the personality of narcissists and their many faces. I find that Dora’s paintings have a level of honesty and bravery. Dora’s works are a testament of survival. I believe they still resonate as a reminder of how society needs to begin to step up as the voice of the survivor can go painfully unnoticed to this day.
