Marty Grosz & Fred Guy – Mainstream Rhythm Jazz Guitar Players

Jazz guitar player Marty Grosz came to the forefront in the 1970s as a fine acoustic guitar player. He is not just a rhythm jazz guitarist, but also a jazz guitar soloist carrying on the tradition and styles of Dick McDonough, Carl Kress, George Van Eps and other top acoustic players of the 1930s. He taught himself how to play guitar from a collection book of guitar tablature.

Marty Grosz’s father was the famous satirical artist George Grosz. With the rise of the Nazi party the Grosz family left Germany in 1932 to settle in the USA making their home in Huntingdon, Long Island, New York. Marty Grosz started playing the ukulele at the age of eight and then took up the jazz guitar when he was twelve learning songs from a collection of jazz guitar tablature. He became interested in jazz guitar music, in particular the Chicago style jazz, and started to play with various groups around New York.

In 1954 after leaving the Army, Marty Grosz settled in Chicago where he took up the banjo. Over the next few years he played in a wide variety of jobs, usually on the banjo. Always fascinated by the guitar, he experimented with many tunings in his spare time. He ended up with one that was based on a banjo tuning, not unlike the tuning used by jazz guitar player Carl Kress. Kress tuned his guitar (low to high) C-F-C-G-A-D, later raising the C to a D an octave below. Grosz tunes his guitar (low to high) Bp-F-G-G-B-D.

Marty Grosz first came to international prominence in 1974 when saxophonist Bob Wilber asked him to join the ‘Soprano Summit’. The relatively enormous success of this group, both in concert and on record, brought the attention of the world’s jazz lovers to the special talents of Marty Grosz. He also started adding some blues based songs to his repertoire which he learned from a collection of blues guitar tablature.

In 1975 Marty Grosz returned to live in New York after having lived in Chicago for eighteen years. There he formed a jazz guitar duo with Wayne Wright. The bulk of their repertoire was based on popular acoustic jazz guitar solos and duets from the 1930s and 1940s which were from collections of acoustic guitar tablature books. In recent years Grosz has continued to play and sing all over the world in diverse classic jazz music groups.

There is no doubt that Marty Grosz, who is also a talented jazz journalist, has made an important contribution to the jazz guitar. Through his tireless efforts the legacy of the jazz artistry of the early acoustic guitar players has been drawn to the attention of new generations of jazz guitarists. The result has been a new interest in a field of the jazz guitar which to a large extent had been forgotten.

Jazz guitar player Fred Guy started his career as a musician on the banjo. His first professional work was with the Joseph Smith Orchestra. Guy then led his own band at “The Oriental” in New York. In early 1925 he joined Duke Ellington’s orchestra. At first he only played the banjo with this historic band but changed to the jazz guitar in 1934. He remained with the Duke Ellington orchestra with hardly a break until January 1949. Like Freddie Green Guy was not a soloist, but an integral part of the Duke Ellington Orchestra rhythm section for almost a quarter of a century.

After Fred Guy left his orchestra, Duke Ellington never hired another guitarist. Guy gave up his career in music and went to live in Chicago. Here he became a ballroom manager in Chicago, a position he held for almost twenty years. After a long illness he committed suicide in 1971.

The Best Guitar to Get

I think that perhaps the sa 100 is really one of the best guitars to get, if not the very best guitar to get. I don’t think that it will answer all our problems, but I’m quite certain that it can improve your musical lifestyle and give you a fresh new direction when it comes to music. This is certainly something that we have to keep in mind, and I hope that other people will also really just keep this in mind. That being said, if you’re not very enthusiastic about the sa 100, then maybe you need to take your interest elsewhere. This is also something which I’ve been thinking about through the years, and I think that it’s something that musicians should pay attention to, especially if they really want to take their music to the professional level. If you want to make music your life, you have to invest in it.

Concerts for Your Own Enjoyment

Concerts are ways of promoting an album, a single or simply just to raise funds. Concerts are live performances by an artist or group of artists in different venues of their choice. Concerts could be of different sizes and can be held in different cities and locations. Concerts could be musical or theatrical but will all require tickets to come and see. All these concerts aim to provide entertainment to all those who are willing to pay for the concert tickets that will permit them to enter into the venue and watch the concert. These concerts could happen outdoor or in a establishment much bigger and can accommodate thousands of audiences. If the organizers scheduled a series of concerts, they used titles to differentiate one concert to another like ‘Taylor Swift: Live in Manila.’ Musical concerts such as this all require concert tickets before one can enjoy it. Violin Value – What Moms and Dads Must Know

When it comes to violin value, most parents may be tempted to give their children the best out of love. Unfortunately, what they consider as the “best” may not actually prove to be so.

Violins are not the kind of instrument that will improve your children’s playing style just because they are handmade or more expensive than most. Violins are designed in such a way that they have to match the current skill level of the user. It is the only way the user will bring out the best from a violin. As such, if your child has only begun playing the violin for some weeks, then you should do your best to ignore your urge to give him a handmade or antique violin when all he needs right now is a Stentor I.

If you really want to help him, then make sure that he has all the encouragement and support he needs to practice harder.

More FAQs for the Intermediate Guitarist

The more questions a student has, the more encouraging it is. This is because intermediate guitar lessons should just be the foundation of learning. The other parts have to be practice and performance. Thus, here are more common questions an intermediate student tends to ask:

Why so many repetitive lessons?

Lessons can appear to be repetitive so you have to look at two angles. First go back and see what the lesson plan is. It could be pseudo intermediate guitar lessons and more of an in-between course like a reviewer. The other angle is that the lesson intends to focus more on details in techniques instead of the big picture. You will notice that as you get better as a player, it’s the details which will make the difference in your playing and your music.

Do I still need a coach since I know the basics?

Do you feel you can go out on your own already? Having the basic skills may be just what you need and you don’t plan on making guitar playing a career. On the other hand, there’s never a time you will stop learning in guitar playing. It applies to life in general and once you think you know it all, it could be a step back.

Found out I Had a Famous Fan at Space Music Gig

I had just finished off a space music gig that at a venue down in London and was in the bar speaking to a few fans when I was confronted by one of the most popular actors on British television who proceeded to congratulate me on a brilliant performance and introduced himself as a big fan. I didn’t know whether he was joking or not as he does a lot of comedy when he is on the television so I had to ask him if somebody had put him up to this. He laughed and said that he has all of my albums and that this is the first time that he has been able to see me live because of my other gigs being abroad and he has a busy schedule with his television work. I was totally flattered that he would say all of this and he actually asked me for a photograph and autograph before I had the chance to ask him!

Play Guitar and Sing Some Tips

Your guitar notes may not follow your words (song) always. It is not an easy task to play guitar and sing at the same time with proper coordination. But nothing is impossible if you work hard with full dedication and practice. Here are some useful tips while practicing which can help both beginners as well as expert guitarists.

  1. Practice with acoustic or praise songs where the chords are repeated.
  2. While practicing, concentrate on the overall sound (do not alternate by listening to the guitar notes for a while and then to your song). Keep practicing to make this single blended song perfect.
  3. Get someone to give a simple rhythmic beat on drums.
  4. Once you feel you are able to coordinate both singing and guitar, and then record your own work. Listen to this and correct all the areas which are not perfect.
  5. Keep practicing until you are thorough and confident.
